Aural disturbance. 666 by 9 Soundware is a set of instruments for the EXS24 sampler within Apple Logic Pro. The theme of the sound set is 666, The Number of the Beast. From drones and disturbing cry-like textures to squeals and intense noise rhythms, these sounds were designed to paint fear-inducing backdrops, as well as evoke fright.

The instruments are based on 50 samples (20 loops, 15 one-shot events, and 15 hits). The source sounds for the samples include animal shrieks and growls, distorted vocals, a bass guitar being beaten, and drum loops. The samples range from very subtle to extremely jarring. Please be very careful when auditioning them. Turning up the monitors to listen to a sample could cause the next one to sound VERY loud.

In addition to the 147 MB 666.exs instrument which uses all 50 samples, included are 20 instruments which make extensive use of the modulation capabilities of the EXS24 mkII sampler. Among them are tempo synced instruments, free-form textural instruments, impact instruments, as well as radical instruments that allow sample switching triggered by MIDI message cc#1 (Camouflage.exs). Many are designed to be played primarily with the modulation and pitch bend wheels (and less so with the keys). As they lend themselves more to performance than step sequencing, a midi controller is highly recommended when using this sound set.

THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN TESTED AND CONFIRMED TO BE COMPATIBLE WITH APPLE LOGIC PRO 10 (VERSION 10.0.7) AND 9 (VERSION 9.0.2), AND KNOWN TO BE COMPATIBLE WITH 8 AND 7.

Unlike the Logic Pro EXS24 factory content, samples used for each instrument are not placed in individual folders. Instead, they are all placed in one folder. The primary reason for this is to simplify the creation of new instruments. Users are invited to create new .exs files which draw on these samples. Great attention was paid to avoid cryptic sample names. Filenames follow a labeling schema which indicate sample attributes such as intended trigger modes and duration. This information can be found at the 9 Soundware website where it is regularly updated. Unlike most other sample content products, this is an evolving product. The door is always open for updates, be it fixes or entirely new instruments. Please visit www.9soundware.com for the latest.

In addition to Apple’s EXS24 mkII and EXSP24 mkII, the sample format is also supported by products such as Native Instruments Kontakt, Mark of the Unicorn Mach Five, Steinberg Halion, and Digidesign Structure. However, EXS24 instruments by 9 Soundware are designed for use solely within the EXS24 mkII and EXSP24 mkII plug-ins included with Apple’s Logic Pro and Logic Express. Proper playback with third party samplers is not guaranteed. In addition, due to enhancements in modulation routings for the mkII version, .exs files by 9 Soundware are not backward compatible with the EXS24 mkI sampler.
